Brisbane defender Daniel Rich has confirmed his AFL retirement at the end of this season and is not giving up hope of a fairy tale ending.
The 33-year-old made the announcement in front of his teammates on Monday as they prepare for Saturday night’s home qualifying final against Port Adelaide.
Rich has played 275 games and is a respected figure at Brisbane, but he has only managed seven games this season and his last AFL match was in Round 13.
He is emerging as a hard-luck story heading into the finals series, with coach Chris Fagan saying last month that he would probably struggle to return to the senior team because he has missed so much football.
“It’s definitely been a frustrating year, but it is what it is and all I can do is try to be the best teammate and person I can to make the group and the club better in any way I can,” Rich said.
“There’s still a lot of time this season, so I’ll work hard and be ready when needed, but if not, I’ll do my part to support the boys and be part of the story, whether I’m there or not. Because this club means a lot to me.
Injury
Daniel Richt made the brave decision to pull himself out of the running for Brisbane Lions selection earlier this year. Now his time in the maroon and yellow jumper could be over due to a recent injury.
The 33-year-old defender, who comes out of contract at the end of the season, has been sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during the Lions’ VFL team’s six-point loss to Williamstown on Saturday.
Brisbane confirmed that both Rich and starting forward Jack Gunston would not be available for consideration due to separate setbacks.
Gunston suffered an MCL strain in his left knee during Saturday’s win over Adelaide, leaving him in a race to be fit for the finals.
Rich, meanwhile, is expected to be out for up to four weeks, threatening to derail his hopes of fulfilling the dream of a 275-game career in Lions colours.

Rich was not selected again at AFL level after standing on his own after the Hawks game, meaning he was not part of the Lions squad for the 2023 AFL Grand Final. This was the first time the club had made the Grand Final during Rich’s time, which was seen by many in the wider AFL community as unfortunate timing given Rich’s loyalty to the club during his time at the bottom of the ladder. But it also shows his selfless and loyal attitude to the club.
Rich announced on the Kick Ones podcast hosted by teammates Cameron Renner and Hugh McCluggage that he will remain at the Lions following his retirement, but has not yet announced in what capacity.
