At 30, Daniil Ricciardo has hardly been able to get past that – Kimi Raikkonen is still going at 40 – but he is well aware that time is running out to win a title in F1. Renault failed to deliver on what it promised, when it took a blow from Red Bull a year later – so it was no surprise that it started looking elsewhere.
He would have preferred a move to Ferrari. Of course, which driver wouldn’t? When he was linked to Raikkonen’s seat in 2016, he was disappointed and it did not come to the fore. When Sebastian Vettel parted ways with Ferrari this week, red rumors started swirling once again – but the truth was he wasn’t really in contention.
However, this time, he already knew. The Ferrari ship had sailed. He had a new focus – McLaren. The iconic British team had already come calling in 2018 trying to entice him to Woking, when it was clear he wanted to drop out of Red Bull. They came close – but then, as we know, Ricciardo picked up Renault’s mega-money offer.
