Following the resignation of Dennis Pagan as coach, Ladley was recruited as the Kangaroos’ new senior coach for the 2003 season. In its first two years, the team finished 10th. He led the Kangaroos to the finals for the first time as a coach in the 2005 season, but in an elimination final the club were defeated by Port Adelaide. In the 2006 season they withdrew and finished 14th.
