Following the resignation of Dennis Pagan as coach, Ladley was recruited as the Kangaroos’ new senior coach for the 2003 season. In its first two years, the team finished 10th. He led the Kangaroos to the finals for the first time as a coach in the 2005 season, but in an elimination final the club were defeated by Port Adelaide. In the 2006 season they withdrew and finished 14th.
Ladley’s fierceness as a player transferred to his coaching style, said to embody his team’s “shinbonner spirit” of determination and never giving up. He was also seen being aggressive towards his playing group on several occasions.
Ladley led North Melbourne to the final for the second time in 2007. At the end of 2007, his contract was up for renewal. Ladley’s contract with North Melbourne was renewed for two years, despite Melbourne Football Club making progress to secure him as coach. She again took North Melbourne to the final in 2008.
Following a mid-season review in 2009 and several losses, Ladley resigned as coach of North Melbourne on 16 June 2009, which would have been his 150th match as coach.
