The team waived 2020 first-round pick Damon Arnette, a cornerback from Ohio State, on Monday in response to a social media post with Arnette brandishing a gun and threatening to kill someone.

Video:

Raiders General Manager Mike Mayock called it a “painful decision” to release Arnette, but said it was necessary under the circumstances. Arnette was also being sued over a hit-and-run accident from 2020.

“We spent significant time, assets and resources trying to help him in all facets of his life,” Mayock said. “There have been a series of bad decisions over the last year or so, but we can’t stand for the video of Damon with a gun threatening to take a life.”

Arnette was drafted with the 19th overall pick the Raiders acquired in the Khalil Mack trade with Chicago.

There were “significant concerns” about Arnette’s character coming into the draft, according to Mayock, but the Raiders felt they could develop him off the field after talking with the Ohio State coaching staff. He said they brought Arnette into the fold because it was an “acceptable risk.”

Gun:

“We found the risk acceptable after doing more homework on Arnette than anybody we’ve done in the years I’ve been here,” Mayock said. “Obviously, we missed. That is 100% on me.”

Arnette struggled with ineffective play and injuries during his short stint with the Raiders. He was on injured reserve at the time of his release. Mayock is hopeful Arnette, 25, can turn his life around.

Pff:

“On a personal note, I’ve talked to Damon, his dad, a couple others in his life,” he said. “From my perspective he’s a very talented young man with a good heart. If he cleans up his life I know he can make a living in the NFL. But not now, with the Raiders.”

Raiders:

For the second time in a week, the Raiders saw one of their 2020 first round picks make a terrible lapse in judgement that led to their swift release.

Last Tuesday it was Henry Ruggs III who got behind the wheel of a car drunk and slammed into another vehicle, killing a young woman.

Sr:

Yesterday, while the team was still very much dealing with that situation, which undoubtedly led to their loss to the Giants, Damon Arnette posted a video in which he was threatening to kill someone while brandishing several firearms.

Once again the Raiders hands were tied. As Mike Mayock explained in a statement over conference call Monday morning.

40 time:

However, general manager Mike Mayock strongly disputes that time as he has said that his scouts timed Arnette in the 4.43 range. How could there be this big of a dispute between the NFL’s time and what scouts recorded on their stopwatches?

There does appear to be some evidence that Arnette got a “quick trigger” from the electronic time as it looks like 0.12 seconds ticked off the clock before he even moved. And if you subtract 0.12 seconds from his time of 4.56, Mayock’s 4.43 suddenly makes a ton of sense.
