Playing this week:
Prescott suffered the calf strain at the end of their overtime win against the New England Patriots on Oct. 17, when he hit receiver CeeDee Lamb for a game-winning touchdown.
The Cowboys were off last week, which gave Prescott some time to recover. Though he was a near-full participant in practice this week, McCarthy insisted that the Cowboys weren’t going to rush his return — especially since they’re 5-1 on the season and hold a big lead in the NFC East.
Where is today:
Rush has appeared in six games throughout his four seasons in the league for the Cowboys, but hasn’t thrown a pass since his rookie season in 2017 or appeared in a game since 2019. Will Grier will serve as Rush’s backup.
The Cowboys first signed Rush in 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan. He spent three years as Prescott’s backup, rejoining the team last year after Prescott’s injury. He knows the system and his teammates closely, but has scant regular-season experience.
Will play tonight: Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott is healthy enough to play against the Minnesota Vikings, but the Dallas Cowboys won’t allow him to, making the star quarterback inactive for tonight’s prime-time game in Minneapolis. That means Cooper Rush will get the nod at starter and Will Grier will serve as the backup.
Prescott suffered a calf strain on the walk-off touchdown in overtime against the New England Patriots in Week 6, and took the podium in a walking boot deemed precautionary by both the team and a jovial Prescott, who readily proclaimed he would “fine.”
Playing today:
If it were a playoff game, however, Prescott noted the odds of him playing would “no question” be “100%”.
Instead, with the Cowboys sitting 5-1 on the season and harboring a healthy lead atop the NFC East, the team is opting to play the long game regarding Prescott, wanting to make sure there are no lingering issues going forward. Rush will make his first career NFL start despite having been in the league since the Cowboys signed him out of undrafted free agency in 2017.
