Ronaldo’s contract will run for two and a half years until June 2025, with a total salary of €200m (£177m) a year once commercial deals are included. This is believed to be the highest salary ever paid to a professional footballer.

He is joining Saudi Arabian club team Al Nassr in a deal that will see him play until June 2025.

“History is in the making,” Al Nassr FC wrote in a Twitter post on its official English-language account.

“This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve greater success but also inspire our league, our country and generations to come, boys and girls, to be the best versions of themselves. At your new home, AlNassrFC Welcome to Cristiano.”

The Saudi club quoted Ronaldo as saying that he was “looking forward to experiencing a new football league in a different country.”

Currently second in the Saudi league, Al Nasr will be Ronaldo’s fifth club in his career. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored more than 700 club goals in a career that began with Sporting in Portugal and has won the Champions League four times with Real Madrid and once with United.
