The 49ers–Cowboys rivalry is a National Football League (NFL) rivalry between the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys lead the series 19-17-1. It is one of the great inter-division rivalry games in the NFL. Both teams do not play every year; Instead, they play once every three years due to the NFL’s rotating division schedule, or play the following season if both teams finish in the same places in their respective divisions. Sports Illustrated ranked it as the eighth best rivalry[1] while the NFL Top 10 ranked this rivalry as the tenth best in the NFL. The rivalry was also the subject of two 2015 episodes of NFL Network’s The Timeline, titled “A Tale of Two Cities”, with actors Sam Elliott (Cowboys) and Jeremy Renner (49ers) as narrators.

The Cowboys-49ers have one of the most rivalries, not only in football, but in all sports. The Cowboys lead an all-time series 19-17-1 and deliver one of the most famous games, and plays in NFL history when “The Catch” occurred in the 1981 NFC title game.
Then, in the 1990s, as the Cowboys went on their Super Bowl run, they had to go through the — you guessed it — 49ers. But both teams also went through down periods, especially in the 2000s and 2010s, as the two teams have not met in the postseason since 1998.
However, this year both the teams performed better than the expectations. Dallas won the NFC East with the league’s best scoring offense and best total offense. But they were equally good on defense, finishing seventh in the scoring defense, second in the third down defense, while cornerback Trayvon Diggs and linebacker/edge rusher Micah Parsons both had breakout years.
He’s moving to a 49ers team that has been plagued with injuries throughout the season in various positions including quarterback, running back, tackle and tight end. As a result, they have had to build up the crime in myriad ways.

Deebo Samuel, taking advantage of all the bodies moving in one direction or another, buries his feet into the ground and rises very quickly into the ground, and they both run with tremendous force. His tackle-breaking ability makes it all the more difficult for the 49ers to stop the attack.
The Niners, of course, combine their bootleg passing game with their run game. Almost every passing game looks exactly like a run until it is passed. The Cowboys weren’t particularly effective against the bootleg this year: Opponents completed 34 out of 34 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and an 114.7 passer rating on those plays.
Then the key for the cowboys would be to create pressure. They outperformed almost any team in the NFL this season, getting a sack, hit, or early on 36.4% of opponent dropbacks. The Niners didn’t allow much in the way of pressure (28.8%, seventh-lowest), but the right flank of their offensive line is now much weaker than most of the year.
He has Daniel Brunskill on right guard and Tom Compton on right tackle. Compton will have to deal with DeMarcus Lawrence, who has been completely ruining things since returning from his leg injury. It would be fair to challenge interception king Trayvon Diggs with a double-move from Samuel or Brandon Ayuk, but again, the Niners need to make sure the pocket doesn’t blow up so that Jimmy G has enough time to overtake the ball. Of course, it all depends on Garoppolo as well, not just combing instinctively and throwing the ball to the other team, even if the security is good and his man is open. Perhaps nothing is more important in this game than whether or not Garoppolo throws a pick.

Where the 49ers have an advantage in the run game that is based on misdirection, the Cowboys have an advantage in the pass game that relies only on superior perimeter talent.
Amari Cooper, CD Lamb, Cedric Wilson, and Dalton Schultz should be able to find an opening—especially against the San Francisco secondary—Cooper and Lamb. San Francisco’s outside corners are much weaker in coverage than slot men Ke’Vaughn Williams, Safari Jaquiski Tart and Jimmy Ward, or linebackers Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw. During the second half of the season, 49ers opponents have repeatedly picked rookie corner Embry Thomas, who has left big game after big game. Jimmy Garoppolo is a very skilled quarterback under center for the 49ers. He has completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,810 passing yards with 20 passing touchdowns. The Eastern Illinois product has racked up more than 300 yards in five games, including two straight to the end of the year.
The 2014 second-round pick has bounced at least two passing touchdowns in six regular-season games. In a Week 18 win over the Los Angeles Rams, Garoppolo scored 32 of 23 for 316 yards with a passing touchdown. The Illinois native showed his chivalry when he headed to San Francisco for a five-play, 88-yard touchdown drive to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Garoppolo will be looking to throw more than 300 yards for the third straight bout.
Quarterback Dak Prescott finished seventh in passing yards (4,449), fourth in passing touchdowns (37) and ninth in QBRs (54.9). Prescott has bounced over 300 yards in five matches. Mississippi State Product ended the regular season on a high note. Prescott went 21-in-27 for 295 yards with a career-high five passing touchdowns.
Dallas has one of the top 1-2 combos in the league with CD Lamb and Amari Cooper at receiver. Lamb made a team-high 79 passes for 1,102 yards and six scores. The 2020 first-round pick had three games with more than 100 yards. Cooper was second on the team with 865 yards on 68 grabs, scoring eight touchdowns. One of the NFL’s most iconic rivalries will be revived in Sunday’s wild card matchup. In a tight history dating back to the 1960s, the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys have gone head-to-head in the post-season with an energy unlike any other rivalry.
“It’s what you love in sports,” writer Lawrence Ross said of the historic matchup. “When you have two teams that absolutely hate each other that are at the top of their prime, and they go at it.”
Both teams ruled the NFC in the early 1990s when they played against each other in championship games for three straight seasons (1992–94). The last time the 49ers and the Cowboys met in the playoffs was the 1994 NFC Championship, when San Francisco won Super Bowl XXIX.
