“Kori’s positive presence and selflessness impressed everyone around her,” the team said in the statement. “While he was incredibly passionate about the game of baseball, his love for his family and his strong faith outweighed everything else.”
Along with the team’s statement, Phillies director of player development, Preston Mattingly, mourned the loss of Phelan.
“Corey is and will always be a special person,” Mattingly said. “His smile brightened up a room and everyone who came in contact with him cherished the conversation. He will always be remembered, especially with the Phillies organization.”

Phelan played a relief 92/3 innings and allowed a run for the rookie-level Phillies in the Florida Complex League in his first professional season last year.
A month after the diagnosis, the New York native visited Philadelphia Phillies players prior to their game against the New York Mets at Citi Field, according to MLB.com.
“It was awesome,” Phelan told MLB.com at the time. “I can’t put into words how awesome it was. Every time I can see them on TV, depending on what channel they’re playing, I watch them and I listen to them for every game.” I love watching them play. They lift my spirits.”
