He is the son of former Newcastle Knights Matthew Johns, nephew of Andrew Johns and younger brother of current Newcastle knights player Jack Johns. Cooper played his junior rugby league with the Narraweena Hawks. He was educated at St Augustine’s College, Sydney and represented the NSW CIS team before signing with Manly Sea Eagles.

Melbourne have announced the singing of outside back George Jennings from Parramatta whilst extending the contracts of Cooper Johns. Jennings has penned a two-year deal to join the Storm after a promising season with the Eels and on loan at the Warriors, scoring seven tries in 14 matches.

According to recent reports, Johns is the latest player to be offered a train and trial deal, which includes insurance and a weekly payment of approximately $1000.
