When the Capitals set up the power play, you see a lot of familiar faces on the ice like Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and John Carlson. But there is one player who causes more head-scratching than anyone else. Conor Sheery is a very dynamic player who contributes to many different things for Washington, but he is not among the team’s top offensive weapons.

In a team that doesn’t lack offensive skills, why has Sherri become a fixture on the Capitals’ power play?

In terms of overall play time on the power play, only Ovechkin, Carlson, Kuznetsov and Tom Wilson have spent more time on the ice at the man’s advantage for Washington than Sherri. Per game, he averages 2:27 of ice time on the power play. That’s longer than Lars Aller’s average of a full minute. That’s even more than Daniel Sprong and Conor McMichael, two other forwards considered by most to be more proficient at scoring than Sherri.

It’s easy to dismiss Sherri’s role on the Power Play as a product of injuries. With Niklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie and Anthony Mantha got injured, plus aler COVID protocol, someone has to play the power play. But Sherri simply didn’t return to the role. In fact, even before Mantha’s injury, he had replaced Mantha.
