According to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, the attack was a retaliation against UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was involved in a confrontation with McGregor’s friend and teammate, Artem Lobov, earlier in the week.
UFC President Dana White said during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up on Friday that he does not plan to help McGregor with his legal problems and dismissed any talk of the incident being a publicity stunt.
“He came into Barclays Center, attacked our fighters and attacked my staff,” White said. “No, you don’t get my help on this.”
He continued: “It’s the last stunt on earth we’ll ever pull off. It’s an embarrassment to the sport and obviously to the UFC. It’s the farthest thing from a stunt. It’s bad.”
White said he would consider a future with McGregor’s organization after UFC 223, which is due to take place on Saturday night. Hours before McGregor’s attack, White had announced that the Irishman would be stripped of his lighter title due to inaction.
