The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games, are a quadrennial international multi-sport event between athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and has run sequentially every four years, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 (cancelled due to World War II). The Games were called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and the British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. Athletes with disabilities have been included as full members of their national teams since 2002, making the Commonwealth Games the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event. In 2018, the Games became the first global multi-sport event to feature the same number of men’s and women’s medals, and four years later they are the first global multi-sport event to feature more women than men.

India medals
From 28 July to 8 August, around 200 Indian athletes will be seen competing for medals in 16 different sports at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.
In the previous edition at Gold Coast 2018, Indian athletes won a total of 66 medals, 26 gold and 20 silver and 20 bronze, finishing third behind hosts Australia and England.
However, with shooting, which contributed 16 of the 66 medals at Gold Coast 2018, Birmingham cut from the 2022 Commonwealth Games schedule, India may struggle to match its tally from Gold Coast 2018.
In fact, out of India’s total of 503 medals at the Commonwealth Games, 135 have come in shooting at the CWG 2022 – more than in any other sport. This includes 30 medals won by Indian shooters during the 2010 New Delhi CWG – where India enjoyed its most successful Commonwealth Games in history, winning a total of 101 medals.
India are already one medal short of Tokyo Olympic javelin champion and World Championships silver medalist Neeraj Chopra with a late withdrawal from the CWG 2022 due to injury.
