The Colorado Avalanche suffered heavy losses in the Stanley Cup Finals, facing the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

When the puck dropped, the avalanche showed that they could use their momentum to offset the Tampa Bay players, who have been here, they did. And it is not sad for the person who hoisted the cup too.

Andre Burakovsky scored 1:23 in overtime to give Colorado a 4-3 win in Game 1 on Wednesday night and put the AVS in a series that is shaping up to be a classic. Burakovsky is one of only two Colorado players with a Stanley Cup ring, and it worked.

“I’ve been there, and I know the situation,” said Burakovsky, who scored two big goals in Game 7 of the East Finals against the Lightning in 2018, when he won it all with Washington. “I’ve been it though, and I know what to expect and the pace and what’s at stake here.”

Post game

Nichushkin, Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantenen recorded two points each, Arturi Lehkönen scored his seventh goal of the playoffs, and Darcy Kuemper earned his first win in the nets after missing most of the conference finals. The Avalanche goaltender made 20 saves in the winning effort.

Lightning scored from Nick Paul, Ondrej Palt and Mikhail Sergachev, while Andrei Vasilevsky blocked 34 of 38 shots.

Tampa Bay will look to return in Game 2 in Denver on Saturday.

Highlights

Game 1 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final did not disappoint.

Andre Burakovsky sent off the Avalanche’s loyal home jubilant as he scored 1:23 in overtime to give Colorado a 4-3 win.

Valery Nichushkin found Burakovsky open from the crowd and the 27-year-old from Austria blew the puck into an open net. The Avalanche took a 1–0 lead in the series in a best-of-seven final.

Tally intercepts Lightning’s return attempt. Tampa Bay came back from a 2–0 and 3–1 deficit to tie the competition in the second period and eventually forced overtime.
