Colin Strickland took a long and unusual path to becoming a professional cyclist, starting his professional career in his late 20s. Now at the height of his ability, he has rewritten the record books in Criterion Racing and is a major force in the fast-growing discipline of gravel.
Colin grew up on a farm outside Austin, Texas. “The first time I got on the bike, there was no tarmac visible—it was two miles on gravel on the highway,” he recalls.
By the time he was in high school, Colin was cycling everywhere. He attended college, earned his degree and worked under conservation until the age of 24, when he won his first race win in an alleycat event. Four years later Colin won the Texas Cup Overall Road/Criterium Championship and the season finale of Red Hook Criterium in Milan, Italy. In 2016, he shifted his focus to the Red Hook series and completed an unprecedented four-race winning streak with victories in Brooklyn, London and Barcelona, capturing the season’s crown. Topping the podium at prestigious events, including Texas’ State Cyclocross State Championships, was just the icing on the cake.

Colin Strickland, a former Criterion and Red Bull-sponsored gravel rider turned cyclocross racer, has expressed his grief over the murder of top gravel rider Moriah ‘Mo’ Wilson. Last Wednesday, May 11, a 25-year-old was shot dead in an apartment in Austin, Texas.

Strickland’s partner, Caitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, is suspected of murder and a warrant has been issued for her arrest. Strickland also said in her statement that she had a brief relationship with Wilson late last year after she and Armstrong split for a period. However, he said that they were not in a romantic relationship at the time of her murder.

“I am saddened by the death of Moe Wilson and the facts revealed during the course of the investigation. I cannot begin to imagine the pain felt by Moe’s family and his close friends,” he said in a statement.

“There is no way to adequately express the regret and torture I feel for my closeness to this horrific crime. I am sorry and I cannot make sense of this immeasurable tragedy.

Bag

In my Gavel Aero data gathering experience having a frame bag in the front diamond upper is a measurable aero advantage. But the difference between that and two UCI-legal compensation triangles in the same location is not measurable outside the wind tunnel. And since it’s gravel, if you stretch the envelope by 100mm you’re probably better off with a compensation triangle.

This is strictly from an aero/weight standpoint. I would still opt for that super-well-conceived frame bag design because it has so many practical advantages! I can’t move anything in my compensation triangle (yet).

What really makes a frame bag is probably the bulk of a pure aero negative beverage tube hanging in the air in this case. The drinking tube just 18″ in the air is horribly un-aero. That’s what I know for sure! You have to bring that tube to another surface, of course. I know that part of the tube is hidden Has race numbers and a part of that is behind the bars of the comfort… but in my estimation there’s enough to hang in the air to reduce whatever aero gain you’d get from the frame bag.

What Makes Colin Strickland? What is the secret of his success? Hear for yourself from Gravel Conqueror here.

The first law of behavioral economics is that while people are not always rational, they are predictable. We all build our lives around routines. This applies to almost everything – food, work, sleep, vacations, family, exercise, name it.

After profiling dozens of professional athletes, I thought I saw the pattern in these over-achievers: a willingness to sacrifice other parts of life in order to maximize their potential.

That is, until I met Colin Strickland. Despite being one of the top gravel riders in the world, he prioritizes moderation.

Strickland is an ex-pro road racer who won the Unbound Gravel in 2019, setting a course record, completed in less than 10 hours – the first to do so. In doing so, he beat out World Tour riders and past winners, surprising many in the cycling world.

This June, Strickland is headed back to Kansas to break his own record as Unbound returns after the pandemic.

Curious to learn about his preparation before the race, we sat down to discuss his training regime, nutrition and recovery plan, and the gear he’s using to return to form.
