Colin Kaepernick will throw during halftime of Michigan’s spring game.

Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick will serve as honorary captain for Michigan’s Mecca and Beau spring game on Saturday. His former NFL coach, UM coach Jim Harbaugh, is doing everything he can to help Kaepernick get a chance to play in the league again.

To that end, Kaepernick will attend a throwback exhibition at halftime of the spring game, Angelique Changelis of The Detroit News reports. The throwing session will be sponsored by the UM student group, Wolverines Against Racism.

Kaepernick would throw NFL free agent receivers.

Harbaugh was the 49ers’ head coach when he drafted them in 2011, and in 2012 Harbaugh, who benched Alex Smith to Kaepernick, went on to the 49ers’ Super Bowl.

He hasn’t played in the NFL since 2016, when he took a knee during the national anthem.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has had at least one conversation with Kaepernick this off-season, but those talks have not escalated, Carroll said this week.

Kaepernick probably played his last NFL game, but it’s not for lack of trying.

Kaepernick last played in the 2016 season, in which he peacefully protested social injustice and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem.

He went unsigned the following off-season, and has since continuously worked towards finding employment in the league.

Kaepernick showed renewed interest in his services in the summer of 2020, when the NFL expressed that it would welcome Kaepernick back, but left the decision to its member clubs to sign him. Neither team has done so so far, but Saturday’s addition of a free-agent could help attract their interest.

Kaepernick will hold a throwing exhibit during halftime of the University of Michigan spring game on Saturday at Michigan Stadium, NFL Network’s Tom Pelicero and Ian Rapoport reported via Telegraph.

Pelicero said draft-eligible players would catch passes from Kaepernick, and NFL team personnel would be allowed to watch in attendance.

Years before Kaepernick was released by the 49ers and replaced by Blaine Gabert (seriously, it’s true), Seattle snubbed Russell Wilson on bringing in Kaepernick to back up.

This was cool because it seemed to show Pete Carroll as an open-minded person and Seattle as the team and city that would be one of the few people entertained to bring on Kaepernick.

But Seattle didn’t sign Kaepernick in 2018 and, in fact, canceled his workout when Kaepernick reportedly promised not to stop kneeling for the national anthem. So it was definitely un-cool for Seattle to make them look like every other team.
