In a stunning victory, Team USA’s Cole Hawker not only won the gold medal in the men’s 1,500 meters at the Stade de France at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, but broke the Olympic record with a time of 3:27.65.

World champion Josh Kerr of Britain won the silver medal with a time of 3:27.79 and Yared Nuguese of the United States won the bronze medal with a personal best time of 3:27.80. Hawker came from behind with a blistering pace in the final stages to overtake Kerr and break the Olympic record of 3:28.32 set by Norway’s Jacob Ingebrigtsen at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

“Just getting through the 100 meters, I knew I had enough,” Hawker said. “I haven’t watched the race replays or anything, but I saw Jacob, I feel like he was thinking about Kerr and started going out, and I thought I’d take advantage of that and try to punch the inside. I’ve been able to do that a few times in my career and he shut it down right away, so it was special to be able to attack me not just once, but twice. “

Hawker is the fourth American to win an Olympic gold medal in the 1,500.

Hawker was recruited by schools such as Indiana, Colorado, and Northern Arizona, but he ultimately chose the University of Oregon where he competed from 2019 to 2021.
