18-year-old Coco Gauff will face France’s Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals of the US Open after beating China’s Zhang Shuai 7-5, 7-5 in the fourth round.

In her first round match, the 18-year-old from Georgia defeated Léolia Jeanjean 6–2 6–3 before taking on Hungary’s Elena Gabriela Russe in the second round. Gough won 6-2 7-6 (7-4) and then faced fellow American Madison Keys in the third round at Arthur Ashe Stadium – a match she won 6-2 6-3 to reach the Round of 16 Gone.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, the 18-year-old said: “It sounds crazy. Chanting my name at Ash Stadium, I was trying not to smile. It was really physical, it felt like a three-setter.

“I really think my mindset helped me today. I’m very happy to be at my home slam and finally to the quarter-finals. This tournament has always been special to me, having grown up watching it. I keep playing So excited to have and experience this atmosphere.”

The young American will take on 17th seed Carolyn Garcia of the tournament tomorrow, Tuesday, September 6.
