Mike Krzyzewski was 33 years old and finishing his first season at Duke in 1981 when a youngster out of Texas Tech landed a coaching gig at the tiny Clarendon College in the Texas panhandle. Mark Adams was 24 years old.

“I thought I was the next John Wooden,” Adams said last week. He paused, then delivered the punch line: “And I was the only one in the room who thought so.”

Forty-one years later, these two men, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Mark Adams, now of Texas Tech, will face off at Sweet Sixteen in San Francisco on Thursday night. Both are among the most respected leaders in college basketball, and both coaching teams at the top of the game—but the path they’ve taken at this point couldn’t be more different.

Adams said of Krzyzewski, “He’s always been a mentor to me that I looked up to.” “He’s not only a great coach, but a great man. Basketball has done so much for now. And he’s created a program that we all admire and respect. It’s just one team for the next, him.” There’s a dynasty he’s built. So our hat is with him.”

Number three seed Red Raiders (27–9) and number two seed Blue Devils (30–6) will combine for a match-up of nearly endless possibilities, which only makes sense in the context of this wild crescendo of a tournament. Known as March Madness. Sports should also remind us why we love sports and why we love legends (some of them anyway) and, most of all, we love the Mark Adams and Mike Krzyzewski crossing on college basketball’s biggest stage. Why Prefer a Story as Impossible as Path.

Longtime Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski suffered an affair during the second half of the Blue Devils’ defeat at Wake Forest on Wednesday night. She skipped the post-game press conference while undergoing treatment and was eventually cleared.

The Herald-Sun’s Steve Wiseman reported that the 67-year-old coach was taken back to Duke University Hospital for a precautionary test. Associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski interviewed reporters and said the spirit of the game was the likely reason:

He hasn’t been sick. He really is in as good shape as can be. I think the spirit of the game, obviously we weren’t playing as well as we should have and there was a huge emotional investment in the game. Maybe the feeling got the better of him. But we expect a full recovery.

Duke Athletics released a statement on Thursday morning saying the coach’s condition had improved after the game and he was allowed to return home:

Coach Krzyzewski felt lightheaded during and after Wednesday night’s Duke-Wake One game. Following the competition, they were examined on site and again at Duke University Hospital by Duke medical personnel for precautionary testing upon their return to Durham. His symptoms and condition improved significantly, and coach Krzyzewski was sent home as early as Thursday morning.

Emotions were definitely running high throughout the game. Duke trailed by three points at halftime and took a six-point lead with less than 13 minutes to go. Wake Forest rallied to take the lead before turning away in the final minutes.

It was the second straight road defeat for the Blue Devils, who entered the game as the fourth-placed team in the country. Every game between now and Selection Sunday is crucial as they try to get the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
