Long before the 2021-22 season begins, Duke’s associate head coach John Scherer said it would be nearly impossible for all players on this year’s roster to escape feelings of a farewell tour for coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“When you’re trying to do something to the best of your ability, you naturally have to feel something,” said the skier, the successor to coach Kay at Duke, upon his retirement. “This season is emotional. That feeling is key to promoting this year’s team.”

It’s safe to say that the excitement at Saturday’s performance ended for a nightmare in epic fashion to honor Krzyzewski, the team’s first two-point loss against North Carolina. Duke lost their last four losses to UNC (13 points) by the margin of the alliance (nine points total).

The Blue Devils (26-5, 16-4 acc) were on the rise before setback – they won seven games in a row, with three on the road. And they beat the same UNC team a month earlier by 20 points. But this usually determined group, made up of a mix of talented freshmen and a few veterans, looked flat and as the Tar Heels began delivering knockout blows in the final minutes of the game.
