GREENVILLE, SC — After his failed attempt to address the inevitable question about a potential second-round matchup with No. 2 Duke on Wednesday, Tom Izzo told No. 7 Michigan State. to play against Mike Krzyzewski, whom he called his “best friend”.

Two days later, Izzo got his wish: The Spartans squeaked at No. 10 Davidson 74-73, and Duke set up a clash of Hall of Fame coaches, trailing No. 15 Cal State Fullerton 78-61.

Izzo is 3-12 all time against Krzyzewski, but Krzyzewski last played in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, it was Izzo who sent him fishing the Elite 8.

“I love the game, I don’t like the record in that matchup over the years,” Izzo said. “I have to be his favorite coach because he has us beating like a drum. Maybe one more time to play against the all-time greats.”

Coach K vs Izzo story aside, both teams will need to make good use of their practice time on Saturday to keep their dancing shoes on for next weekend.

Duke took the past few weeks a step further in comparing his defensive flaws and lack of rigor.

Nevertheless, the Blue Devils struggled against pressure from the Titans in the first half, making eight turnovers that turned into 12 points for the Titans.

Duke made adjustments in the second half, limiting miscalculations with better communication, fighting through the screen and struggling for a loose rebound. This led to Big West Conference leading scorer E.J. Anosike in Czech with just 10 points, well below their season average of 16.5 per game. The Blue Devils also equaled a season high with 10 blocks in the win.

“It’s going to be really important for us to defend well,” said center Mark Williams, who finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five blocks in the win. “Communicating and making all the right turns; It’s huge for us.”

That said, all lost in “Krzyzewski’s Last Ride” and “Duke’s NBA T”.
