Philip Jack Brooks (born October 26, 1978), better known by his ring name CM Punk, is an American professional wrestler, sports commentator, actor, and retired mixed martial artist. Both Punk and Cabana began training at the Steel Domain Wrestling Company in Pittsburgh at the same time; The “steel” in the company name belongs to Ace Steel, a backstage producer at AEW and part of Punk’s story line until Sunday’s title match. Punk and Cabana were teammates and opponents in the early part of their careers in the Midwest independent scene, and were steady mates in Ring of Honor as the second City Saints with Ace Steel.
This close relationship fell apart after Punk left WWE. Cabana hosted a pioneering wrestling podcast, Art of Wrestling, where he interviewed wrestlers about their art (think a pro wrestling version of WTF with Marc Maron). After leaving WWE, Cabana turned on Punk, and he discussed his frustrations about his booking and use. And more importantly, Punk accused WWE and one of its doctors, Chris Aman, of negligence.
