The pitcher suffered a hand injury last year – which caused him to miss the playoffs and score the fewest innings in any entire season since he was a rookie. He didn’t get a chance to fully stretch until Opening Day. Now, it’s a week later and he’s at the first start of the season, and he’s working. Given the circumstances, Clayton Kershaw knew the inevitable was coming.

The three-time National League Cy Young Award winner looked like his old self in a 7-0 win over the Twins on Wednesday, hitting seven perfect innings in his first start of 2022. He had thrown 80 pitches and it looked like he might have the potential to finish his second no-hitter – and in what would be the first perfect game of his 15-year career with the Dodgers.

Salary

Kershaw’s contract base salary is $17M plus those incentives above. If he makes at least 16 starts in 2022, he will get a bonus of $1M. Then he will earn an additional $1M every time he hits 20,22,24, and game 26 starts.

In his last three 162-game regular seasons, Kershaw has made nearly 26 starts. If his elbows, and the rest of his body, are grasped, he can take full advantage of the incentive-laden contract.
