Clayton Edward Kershaw (born March 19, 1988) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has played for the Dodgers for the entirety of his MLB career. A left-handed starting pitcher, Kershaw has played 14 seasons in the major leagues since making his debut in 2008. He is an eight-time All-Star, a three-time National League (NL) Cy Young Award winner, and the 2014 NL Most. Valuable player. His 2.49 career earned run average (ERA) and 1.00 walks plus hits per inning pitch rate (WHIP) are among the lowest starts in the live-ball era (minimum 1,000 innings pitch).  Kershaw has allowed career hits per nine innings at an average of 6.78, the second lowest in MLB history. He has been described as the best pitcher in baseball for most of his career, and as one of the greatest pitchers of all time.

At least that’s what the 34-year-old told reporters after the Dodgers’ 7-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. Kershaw needed 80 pitches to retire all 21 of his batsmen, with 13 strikeouts along the way. He was replaced in the eighth inning by reliever Alex Vessia leaving a single in front of the other batsman. This ended the team’s chance of completing the first combined full game in MLB history.

The Dodgers came on with a combined one-hitter after another reliever, Justin Bruehl, closed things with a 1-2-3 ninth. However, much of the discussion during and after the contest focused on what some observers thought could have been – and should have been – a chance for Kershaw to add his name to a very short list. In the long history of Major League Baseball, there have been only 23 perfect games, and none since 2012.

Spring training is in full swing, free agency is derailed, and baseball is officially back. MLB insider Bob Nightingale investigates whether fans will forgive the league for an ugly off-season.

In his maiden start to the 2022 season, 34-year-old Clayton Kershaw turned back the clock nearly a decade ago, when he was unquestionably the most influential pitcher in baseball.

The Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander and three-time Cy Young Award winner threw seven right innings in the Dodgers’ 7-0 win on Wednesday afternoon.

Kershaw did not have the opportunity to complete the 24th perfect game in MLB history when he was dismissed at the bottom of the eighth inning after throwing 80 pitches, 53 of them for strikes.

“I would have loved to stay, but big things, man, big things,” Kershaw said.

Leaning heavily on his slider, Kershav faced 13 of the 21 twins.

Postgame

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw injured his forearm and may be out for a long time. His post-game interview was hard to watch.

Kershaw was clearly defeated after the game, and rightly so. The Dodgers have fought throughout the season for a chance to win back-to-back World Series. While he still has an excellent chance of doing so without Kershaw, he clearly wanted to play a part in his post-season run.

Manager Dave Roberts also admitted that he is “not very optimistic right now.”
