The Florida Panthers and Philadelphia Flyers made a big trade on Saturday when the Flyers sent Claude Giroux, Germán Rubtsov, and 2024 fifth-round pick Owen Tippett to the Panthers in exchange for a first-round pick (either in 2024 or 2025), and a third-round pick in 2023.

Claude Giroux is leaving the Philadelphia Flyers and heading to the Florida Panthers for a playoff run.
The Florida Panthers haven’t been a true contender for a long time. This is their year that they are all in for a championship, and the move they took yesterday just before the deadline supports that claim.

Despite how bad the Flyers have been, ex-captain Claude Giroux has had a great season now. He has amassed 42 points from 57 matches, and he has certainly been a bright spot in the season for the struggling side.

Let’s get into five ideas of after business.

Did get traded

The Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday traded longtime captain Claude Giroux, who recently played his 1,000th career game with the franchise, to the Florida Panthers.

In return, the Flyers receive Owen Tippett, a conditional first-round pick in 2024 and a third-round pick in the 2023 draft. He also traded Conor Bühnmann, Germán Rubtsov and his fifth-round pick in 2024 as part of the deal.

Flyers will receive Florida’s first round of 2024 selections, unless the pick makes the top 10. In that case, Philadelphia would receive Florida’s 2025 first-round selection.

Trade rumors

The Claude Giroux saga finally comes to an end… for now. The Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers finally pulled off one of the largest trades expected on the 2022 trading time frame. The Flyers exchanged Giroux, Conor Bahmann, likely German Rubtsov, and the 2024 fifth-round pick for Owen Tippett, the 2024 or 2025 first-round pick, and the Panthers in exchange for the 2023 third-round pick. The Flyers retained 50 percent of Giroux’s cap hits.

The deal looks great for the Panthers, as they were thrown into the deal while leaving Tippett, who found it difficult to stay in the lineup on a regular basis. He dropped just one pick in the first round not too far into the future.

Sorry the gritty, but Claude Giroux’s actual biggest fan was in the building on Thursday. And he read the lineup in the Philadelphia Flyers locker room.

Flyers captain’s father, Raymond Giroux, was in attendance at the Wells Fargo Center to celebrate his son’s 1,000th NHL game. So it was easy for coach Mike Yo to have the option of reading pregame lineup cards.

The elder Giroux read out the lineup in a loud and prepared fliers locker room, but did not announce his son, saying that he had forgotten his name. When he did, after a beating, the room exploded.

It was the start of a special night for the veteran of 15 NHL seasons, all with Flyers.
