The New Orleans Pelicans have acquired guard CJ McCollum from the Portland Trail Blazers, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday.

The Pelicans are sending guards Josh Hart, Tomas Sotoransky, Nickel Alexander-Walker and Didi Lauzada in the deal. New Orleans is also sending one protected first-round pick and two second-round picks to Portland. The first round pick is secured for 2022 at numbers 5 to 14, and if it doesn’t reveal this year, the first rounder looks to be the future for the Trail Blazers.

Portland is also sending Larry Nance Jr. and Tony Snell to New Orleans.

The trade breaks up the backcourt pairing of Portland’s McCollum and All-NBA guard Damien Lillard and ends an era for the franchise. The Blazers have made it to the playoffs every season since the team drafted McCullum in 2013, a year after Lillard was picked.

Despite regular-season success, postseason glory has waned out of Portland. The team reached the final of the conference only once and was eliminated five times in the first round.

McCullum, who has averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds this season, gives the Pelicans a reliable backcourt option that can hit from long range.

In the past five seasons, McCullum has made 1,083 off-the-dribble jumps, the fourth-most in the league in that period, according to Second Spectrum data. This season, the Pelicans rank 29th in the league in off-the-dribble made jumps and last in off-the-dribble jump shot field goal percentage.

McCallum, who is 30, signed a three-year, $100 million extension in the summer of 2019, which took effect this season. He is set to pay $33.3 million in 2022-23 and $35.8 million in 2023-24.

McCullum’s presence on the field will help the New Orleans squad that moved to 10th place in the Western Conference standings with their win over Houston on Sunday night. It was the first time the Pelicans had the only right to a top-10 spot in the standings in all seasons after the team started the season 3–16.

While the Pelicans await the return of Zion Williamson, McCullum can pair up with forward Brandon Ingram to give the Pelicans a one-two offensive punch on the perimeter. The Pelicans are 19-20 in the games Ingram has played this season, but just 2-12 in the games he has missed.

High School

McCullum played high school basketball for the Golden Eagles at Glennock High School in his native city, Ohio. … During his high school career, McCallum worked to refine his shooting strokes; The successful effort was reflected in the 29.3 points-per-game he averaged during his senior season.
