CJ McCollum is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association. During his third year in the league in 2015–16, he was named the NBA Most Improved Player.

The Pelicans are sending out guards Josh Hart, Tomas Satoransky, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Didi Louzada in the deal. New Orleans is also sending a protected first-round pick and two second-round picks to Portland. The first-round pick is No. 5 to 14 protected for 2022, and if it doesn’t convey this year, the first-rounder kicks to the future for the Trail Blazers.

The trade breaks up Portland’s backcourt duo of McCollum and All-NBA guard Damian Lillard and ends an era for the franchise. The Blazers have made the playoffs every season since the team drafted McCollum in 2013, a year after selecting Lillard.

While Indiana has clearly shifted toward a rebuild following an initial deal that sent Caris LeVert to Cleveland, the Pacers are still said to be seeking at least two first-round picks for Myles Turner and an even greater package for Domantas Sabonis. Portland’s threshold to part ways with McCollum seems considerably lower.
The Trail Blazers already signaled their interest in shedding long-term salary by trading Norman Powell and Robert Covington to Los Angeles for merely Eric Bledsoe, Justise Winslow, rookie guard Keon Johnson and a 2025 second-round pick.
That deal sets a difficult precedent for Portland to command a much richer return for McCollum, whom rival team personnel have largely deemed to hold less trade value than Powell.
