We’re very hopeful that Christian can play,” head coach Matt Roulette said on Friday. “It’s looking good today, so until something comes along, I’m sure he’ll give it his best chance to go. we are still alive.

“At this time of year everyone bangs in the league. A lot of people on this team are bumped. We have a different plan for Christian. He takes a lot of hits during games. People touch about They talk a lot, but if you look at the number of times they have to pass the protect, they are hits.”

McCaffrey, a 2017 first-round pick, was one of the league’s brightest stars during his first three seasons. He led the NFL from scrimmage in 2019 with 2,392, rushing for a career-best 1,387 yards and adding to the 1,005 he received that year.

The next two years were more difficult, as he was limited to only 10 games in 2020 and 2021 due to a collection of injuries.

McCaffrey, 26, had a strong start this season with 670 yards. It is fourth in the league, behind only Saxon Barkley (771), Tyrek Hill (719), and Nick Chubb (700).

But the form McCaffrey showed in the first six games of this year, when little was going around as planned, was enough to convince the 49ers to make a bold midseason move.

The Panthers currently have D’Onta Foreman, Chuba Hubbard and Raheem Blackshear running back on the roster, and this week brought Spencer Brown back to the practice team.
