After weeks of speculation about the business of Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey, the deal was finally done. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that he is being traded to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a draft pick. The Panthers confirmed the trade on their Twitter page shortly after.
Christian McCaffrey Business Compensation and Insights
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided details about trade compensation shortly after Shafter tweeted the news. The Panthers will get a second round pick in 2023, a third round pick in 2023, a fourth round pick in 2023 and a fifth round pick in 2024.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelicero reported that the Los Angeles Rams made a push for McCaffrey, but were not able to put together a deal that matched the 49ers. And, despite rumors about the Buffalo Bills being interested in running back, Rapoport notes that they were never a serious contender.
49ers trade for
The Niners sent second, third and fourth round picks in 2023 and a fifth-round pick for McCaffrey in 2024 to the Carolina Panthers in hopes that he could help jump.
During the first six weeks, the 49ers have been plagued by injuries throughout the roster, and their offense has not been played close to the level of their prime defense.
Coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t want a repeat of 2019, when the Niners ruined an elite defense as the offense couldn’t close the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Simply put: San Francisco believes it’s in a championship window, and trading for McCaffrey sends that message loud and clear to the rest of the league.

How would McCaffrey fit into the 49ers’ offense?
This should be relatively intuitive for McCaffrey, who has plenty of experience working in outdoor field-heavy planning and brings the type of versatility that will allow Shanahan to mix and match with the team’s skill-positioning choices. Make no mistake, while McCaffrey will be the team’s No. 1 option when running back, Shanahan will use him heavily in the pass game and create more headaches for the defense, who will now have to keep an eye on the likes of him and receivers Debo Samuel. and Brandon Ayuk and tight end George Kittel. — Nick Wagner.
