Christian McCaffrey almost joins a long list of players changing jersey numbers, adhering to the NFL’s lax restrictions on jersey numbers a player can wear in certain positions. McCaffrey admitted that he considered switching from No. 22 to No. 5 this season, but the monetary value of switching numbers this year was too high.

“Not this year. We’ll see,” McCaffrey said on a conference call at the Panthers minicamp. “It’s a number that means a lot to me. It would be a good check to change it this year. I don’t know if I’ll make the switch or not, but I’m number 22 this year.”

Fantasy outlook

Panthers is a terrifying but spectacular dumpster fire. While smoke rises and stench fills the air, McCaffrey is in awe. He has been impervious to the flammable bags of garbage around him. He is RB4 in Fantasy Points per game, ranked first in opportunity share and second in weighted opportunities. The team is looking to trade him, hoping they continue to force him to touch. He has averaged 19.7 touches and 111.7 total yards with a 22.4% target share (first). He is tenth in breakaway runs, ninth in yards scored per touch, and 11th in tackles avoided. McCaffrey is an RB1 based on volume alone. Buccaneers have a tough defense, so don’t expect a sexy stat line. Tampa Bay has allowed the 11th-highest rush success rate, but they also have the fourth-lowest explosive run rate in rushing yards per game and 14th-place opposing offenses. It will also be difficult for McCaffrey to win the match. Tampa Bay ranks second in the DVOA, with the fewest yards per reception and the third lowest reception per game.
