Christian Jackson McCaffrey (born June 7, 1996) is an American football running back for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Stanford and was drafted eighth overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Panthers announced that the Carolina Panthers traded the franchise, driving Christian McCaffrey back to the San Francisco 49ers.
McCaffrey, the Panthers’ number 8 overall draft pick in 2017, was speculated to be on the trading block after the team fired previous head coach Matt Roulette earlier this month. Two people with direct knowledge of the talks said that the Panthers were initially asking for multiple first-round picks for McCaffrey – but as the trade talks developed, it became clear to all involved that no team would be able to play that team. Wouldn’t be willing to part with level capital.
In fact, no first-rounder was on the table at all. The Panthers received a second-round pick in 2023, a third-round and fourth-round pick in 2023, and a fifth-round pick in 2024, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
