Dino gaudio
Former Louisville men’s basketball assistant coach Dino Gaudio was sentenced on Friday to a year’s probation for extortion, five months after threatening his boss, head coach Chris Mack. Mack records the conversation, in which Gaudio tells her he is going to be fired, and hands it over to the school administrators. The recording was then given to law enforcement. Gaudio was charged in May and convicted in June. Mack received a six-game suspension on Friday for failing to comply with the university’s policies in handling the matter. An audio recording of Gaudio’s threats to Mac was heard by Sports Illustrated. After Louisville was kicked off the field of the men’s NCAA Tournament, a meeting took place in Mack’s office in March, and Mack decided to make a staff change. Mack told Sports Illustrated that Gaudio initially walked out of his office after saying he was being let go, then turned back. Mack told SI, “Given an explosive situation, I decided to defend myself” by recording the subsequent discussion. “I wanted to make sure there was no confusion about this unfavorable situation.” Mack declined further comment.
Replacement
The basketball off-season had a bad start for Louisville coach Chris Mack. He will be on bed rest for some time after knee replacement surgery before he can get on the road to recuperation. On Monday, Mack posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed to Twitter, with the accompanying caption, “In 1991 my physical therapist, Andy Lair, told me that I would eventually receive a knee replacement from all of my ACLs. I Laughed, said Andy’s not happening. Andy wins in 2019. Mack, 49, has torn his ACL three times (ouch)—twice at Xavier’s in college and once in a men’s league game. He also tore his patellar tendon while taking a dip in an exercise in 2012 as a coach of the Musketeers. It’s been a painful road, but Mack used his injuries to motivate the Louisville players following their loss to Duke this season.
Extortion
Louisville suspended men’s basketball coach Chris Mack for six games on Friday after concluding he had not followed university guidelines and procedures during an extortion by a former assistant coach.Louisville said in a statement that Mack would be suspended without pay from November 8 to November 27 and would not participate in six non-ACC games, including two games in the Bahamas. Mack will be banned from contact with players and coaches during the suspension. According to the school, they will lose about $221,000 in compensation.
Buyout
The marriage between the Louisville Cardinals’ basketball program and head coach Chris Mack appears to be coming to an abrupt end. According to ESPN college basketball insider Jeff Borzello, who says nothing is certain at this point, a major focal point is the buying numbers Mac will get on its way. “Louisville is in discussions to split with coach Chris Mack, sources tell me.As Borzello wrote in an excerpt published on ESPN, a joint meeting between the Board of Trustees and the University of Louisville Athletic Association was suddenly convened Wednesday afternoon “to discuss proposed or pending litigation and personnel matters.” According to sources, Mack’s future as Louisville coach and any potential separation proposals are expected to be discussed at that meeting.
