Fortunately for the Seahawks, they approached Carson this offseason, not expecting more, if any, availability.

The team re-signed Rashad Penney to a one-year, $5.75 million deal, bringing back the former first-rounder, who averaged 134.2 rushing yards and 1.2 touchdowns per game in the final five weeks of last season. Like Carson, injuries have been a recurring issue for Penny, but he shone enough that the team wants him back in the future after Russell Wilson.

On the running back depth chart with Penny is second-round rookie Kenneth Walker III, who won the Doak Walker Award for best running back in college football at Michigan State with 1,636 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.

A neck injury ended his career in the 2021 season for the Seattle Seahawks, running behind Chris Carson.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Carson has decided to retire due to injury, a source made aware of the situation said.

Rapoport said the decision comes after he physically failed to run. The Seahawks released Carson later Tuesday with a failed physical designation, which allows RB to receive injury protection benefits.

“Ever since I first saw Chris in the film, I’ve loved his style, and was thrilled when we were able to have him,” head coach Pete Carroll said in a statement Tuesday. “It was thrilling to see him grow and be such an influential part of our show with such great style. We will miss him and everything he brought to our show.”

The 27-year-old played just four matches last season and was ruled out due to injury.
