Barnett was born in Zaragoza, Spain, where his father was stationed as a captain in the United States Air Force.
Around the age of four, the family returned to the United States, where they settled in Georgia after bouncing around.
Both of his parents are black belts in Taekwondo, and he began training at the age of five.
Barnett earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Campbellsville University and the University of South Florida.
Barnett competed in wrestling on a scholarship at Campbellsville and began training in Judo.
After demonstrating his moves in a dance battle, Barnett was invited to try out mixed martial arts and began training immediately.
