A tough day. We wanted to be on top of our game but we weren’t. We were too slow, not fast enough. We were not competitive for this world-class level. The players are disappointed, they don’t need to be punished any more, they know that we made decisions on the pitch which were cruel. It didn’t help that we accepted the red card. It was definitely difficult. I told the players earlier that whatever happens today, if we’re celebrating like hell or it’s a hard day at the office, we use the next two days to forget the game, because Chelsea Defeat against is not season-defining for us. We’re not overjoyed and it’s not good for confidence, but it’s not season-defining. We let ourselves down for the next two days, after that we keep going.”

It is difficult to gauge Chelsea’s start in the season before today’s match with Norwich.

The more cynical-minded may see the Blues’ run of 19 points in eight matches as an aberration. Thomas Tuchel’s men have hardly set the height of the league and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was needed to ensure they secure a 1–0 win over Brentford to retain their place at the top of the table.

However, optimists will rightly point out that winning while performing at sub-standard is the hallmark of a champion. It is an industry that is driven by results and if this group of superstars are able to carve their way to victory it should indicate that they are ready to clamor for the title.

They host Norwich for today’s opening kick-off and if there is such a thing as an easy game in this competitive ecosystem it certainly is. The Canaries are without a win in their eight matches, have a negative 14 goal difference and have scored just once in their last five matches.

After an impressive 4-0 win over Malmö in the Champions League, Chelsea are probably ready to repeat that form in the league. Fatigue could be a factor as they played on Wednesday, but as they have proven so far, even a lousy performance should be enough to get the job done.

Predicted line

Werner appeared to stretch his hamstring and Thomas Tuchel revealed on Friday that both players will be sidelined for at least Chelsea’s next two matches against Norwich and Southampton.

The Blues made a total of five changes to face Norwich, with England defender Reece James getting fit again and Trevoh Chaloba and Matteo Kovacic also returning to the starting XI along with Havertz and Hudson-Odoi.
