The move cut ties with their most productive pass-rusher this season and signaled a change in direction for the franchise, especially after trading fellow defensive tackle Montez Sweat for a 2024 second-round pick earlier in the day. After being traded to the Chicago Bears.

Despite a three-game losing streak following the bye, San Francisco remains in the Super Bowl discussion and this is exactly the type of move John Lynch should be pushing to take his team to the top. When healthy, Young has shown the ability to be a legitimate game-wrecker and should be able to attack quarterbacks with ease in the Bay Area with Nick Bosa on the other side of the defensive line.
As it relates to compensation, this was no easy task for the Niners. This is a compensatory selection they are reportedly giving up, meaning it will fall at the bottom of the third round. For the Titans to hire Ryan Carthon as their GM, the franchise is set to receive a compensatory third-round pick in 2024 and another pick in 2025 if Young leaves in free agency. So, you can either look at this deal as a reward for developing Carthon or effectively getting a one-year compensatory pick down the road while making a push for a championship.
And if the 49ers decide to sign Young, they have a former No. 2 overall pick who hasn’t even smelled his prime yet. Chase Young Trade
Rumors
The short answer to Rapoport’s question is, yes, they could absolutely trade both.
Early rumors before Week 8 stated that the Bears had called commanders inquiring about Young’s availability, not Sweat’s.
The major rumor regarding Sweat was linked to the Atlanta Falcons, who were said to have offered a third-round pick in 2024, which would have been a second-round pick if the player and team agreed to an extension. The pickup will be made.
Now, with Sweat moving to the NFC North, the NFC South-leading Falcons could be the front-runners to offer a third-round tight end pick in the 2024 NFL Draft for Young.
If such a trade is executed it would put Washington in the top 100 of next year’s draft at 11th, 37th (from Chicago), 42nd, 73rd and 83rd.
