Wreck tonight
Things are getting worse at the Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Cup Series race this afternoon.
First, Ross Chastain collided with the back of Chase Elliott’s number 9 car, causing Elliot to exit and a warning flag appeared.
At the end of the video below, you can hear Elliot complaining about Chastain on his headset.
“I mean, what was he doing?” Elliot says about Chastain. “He ran to get me into [Turn] 3 and then made me run again.”
Crash
Chase Elliott won the Quaker State 400 after crashing on the final lap of Cory Lajoie at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday. It was Elliott’s third Cup Series win of the season.
The Georgia native led 96 of 260 laps on Sunday, and in nine starts it is his first career win at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Elliott is the only NASCAR driver with three wins this season.
Ross Chastain, who was involved in multiple accidents on Sunday, finished second, while Austin Sindrick finished third.
Here’s a look at the top 10 finishers from Sunday’s race, as well as a brief rundown of the action.
What happened to in the race today
According to Dustin Long of NBC Sports, NASCAR has punished Chase Elliott for a breach of rules in Sunday’s Cup Series race, leading to a two-race suspension for crew chief Alan Gustafson.
Gustafson was also fined $50,000, while NASCAR awarded Elliot 20 points.
The No. 9 team violated section 20.4.8.1 in which the rear window did not meet the specifications.
Elliott finished 11th in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, earning 33 points in the process. However, the violation was detected later during the inspection.
The 22-year-old is now 18th in the Monster Energy Cup standings with 128 points. After finishing fifth in the standings last season, this is clearly not where he wants to be.
