Islam Makhachev won one of the biggest wins in recent MMA history at UFC 280, submitting Charles Oliveira in the second round to claim the vacant Lightweight Championship.

Makhachev won every area of the fight from the opening bell, hitting good foot shots and scoring early takedowns. In a submission win, Oliveira, the UFC’s all-time leader, threatened a few submission attempts, but didn’t manage to lock in anything due to Makhachev’s superior position.

Makhachev also hit a few punches in the opening frame that seemed to shake Oliveira. The same would happen in the second round, but this time Makhachev did not let Oliveira survive.

After a right hand sent Oliveira to the canvas, Makhachev followed suit and quickly locked in an arm-triangle choke that forced Oliveira to tap the 3:16 mark of Round 2.

Makhachev did what every recent rival of Oliveira could not manage. Oliveira was shaken in many of his recent encounters but always managed to find a way to turn things around and win. This ability to survive in bad places led Oliveira to win the lightweight belt in December 2021 with a TKO win over Michael Chandler and a successful defense against Dustin Poirier.

In his most recent outing, Oliveira had turned the tables again after an initial scare, handing Justin Gaethje. However, Oliveira lost the title before that fight, having lost weight for the fight, leaving the belt empty for a fight with Makhachev.
