‘Du Bronx’ was born and raised in a poor family in a favela in the tourist city of Guaruja, So Paulo, Brazil. He used to play football in his childhood. However, at the age of 7, Oliveira was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and heart palpitations. After this, the doctors said that he could not continue playing the sport.

However, Charles Oliveira was introduced to BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) at the age of 12 by a neighbor. Since then, he has defied the odds and never looked back. In addition, ‘Du Bronx’ became a BJJ black belt and is now one of the best MMA athletes in the UFC lightweight division.

The UFC Lightweight Championship is in line for only one person at UFC 274. Defending champion Charles Oliveira failed to make the 155-pound weight limit at Friday’s weigh-in. Oliveira would be stripped of his title and ineligible to win it back in the main event. As a result, only his rival Justin Gaethje is eligible to win the championship.

Oliveira initially weighed 156 pounds. He stripped naked for the latter attempt but was still over a half-pound over the strict 155-pound weight limit. “Du Bronx” was given an extra hour to shed the extra weight. Non-title fights have a higher one-pound weight allowance meaning a fighter can weigh 156 pounds for a lighterweight or 171 pounds for a 170-pound welterweight fight. This leniency is not given to fighters competing for the UFC title.

Weigh in

Charles Oliveira is no longer the UFC Lightweight Champion after losing weight on Friday.

“Du Bronx” was the last fighter to weigh in and came in at 155.5 pounds, half a pound over the lightweight championship limit for Saturday’s main event in front of Justin Gaethje. He was given an extra hour to gain weight, but was again 155.5 pounds on his second attempt. Gaethje was the second fighter to weigh in on Friday morning and came in at 155 pounds on the dot.

With the miss, Oliveira was stripped of the lightweight championship, which is now considered vacant. Only Gaethje will be eligible to win the title on Saturday.

Two UFC championships were scheduled on the line on Saturday night when UFC 274 went down in Phoenix, but that all changed during Friday’s weigh-in when Charles Oliveira lost his belt on the scales. Oliveira came in 155.5 pounds overweight for the 155-pound competition and was removed from the belt, but challenger Justin Gaethje could still lift the title with a win. Even with the sudden change in the main event, UFC 274 has a stacked card with plenty of big stars and champions both past and present.

The co-main event featured Rose Namajunas defending the women’s strawweight title against Carla Esparza. Esparza and Namajunas have met once before, with Esparza becoming the first strawweight champion when she defeated Namajunas in the final of “The Ultimate Fighter” in 2014.
