Did make weight

The UFC Lightweight Championship is in line for only one person at UFC 274. Defending champion Charles Oliveira failed to make the 155-pound weight limit at Friday’s weigh-in. Oliveira would be stripped of his title and ineligible to win it back in the main event. As a result, only his rival Justin Gaethje is eligible to win the championship.

Oliveira initially weighed 156 pounds. He stripped naked for the latter attempt but was still over a half-pound over the strict 155-pound weight limit. “Du Bronx” was given an extra hour to shed the extra weight. Non-title fights have a higher one-pound weight allowance meaning a fighter can weigh 156 pounds for a lighterweight or 171 pounds for a 170-pound welterweight fight. This leniency is not given to fighters competing for the UFC title.

Stripped of title

The UFC 274 main event has lost some of its luster after Charles Oliveira failed to lose weight on Friday.

According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, a UFC official ruled that the lightweight title was now vacant and only Justin Gaethje would be eligible to win it.

Oliveira was stripped of the championship after weighing in at 155.5 pounds. He was given an additional hour to lose the half-pound he needed to make up the Lightweight Limit, but was unable to do so.

Oliveira has faced weight loss several times in his mixed martial arts career. This is the fifth time the Brazilian star has been unable to lose weight as of 2012.

The UFC originally signed Oliveira in 2010 after going 12-0 in various promotions around the world. After winning his first two fights as a lightweight, he went on to win his next three bouts with two losses against Jim Miller and Donald Cerrone. He also converted a win into a no-contest after officials determined that he had hit Nick Lentz with an illegal knee.

After that three-fight stretch, Oliveira moved to featherweight in an attempt to revive his career. He had intermittent success, but lost weight four times in a 10-fight period from 2012–16.

The strongest one came in November 2016 before the fight against Ricardo Lamas. Oliveira weighed 155 pounds, which was nine pounds over the featherweight limit.
