The unique-looking back-shaft putter used by Charl Schwartzell for the past 18 months — and the one that helped lead him to a T-3 finish at last week’s 3M Open — was initially made from a garbage can at PXG HQ. was to be recovered. Scottsdale, Arizona.

Depending on your view of the putter’s aesthetic, you’ll probably be tempted to laugh. But given that the South African posted his best PGA Tour finish in more than two years, with his putter getting nearly a stroke on the field, you’re probably more intrigued by the science behind the putter. Why is it so effective for Schwartzell.

First, the backstory.

According to a PXG spokesperson, the Putter was an early prototype that never went into production. In fact, the company had already finished the design before Schwartzel visited the headquarters to work with PXG engineers.

“Charl initially expressed interest in testing the armlock style putter,” said a PXG spokesperson. “After testing the traditional armlock design, Charl explained that he was always looking for more forward shaft lean while maintaining the forward ball position. This could not be achieved with the traditional head design.

“Thinking about the requirements, we took a back-shaft design from a scrap bin; Throwing it in the trash had dents and scratches all around. We built the putter and Charl immediately felt it was a much more natural fit. ,

Analytics likely played a role in Schwartzell’s discovery of the change.

In 2010, his strokes goal: putting average was 0.899. He made only 11 PGA Tour debuts that year, with 36 rounds played, so he did not meet the minimum required number of rounds to be played to officially qualify for any of the statistical categories. If he had, he would have been No. 1 in the strokes genre: ahead of official No. 1, Luke Donald (0.874 average) that year.
