Injury video

Carolina Panthers guard Chandler Zavala has been released from the hospital after leaving the field with a neck injury late in the first quarter against the Detroit Lions on Sunday and is flying home with the team.

The rookie was injured while running and it took time for the medical staff to secure his neck with a brace. He was placed on a backboard and in the back of a cart. Zavala was taken to a hospital, where he was alert and able to move all limbs.

“We think it was a bad stinger, but our medical staff always takes every precaution to protect our players,” Panthers coach Frank Reich said after Detroit’s 42–24 win.

They immediately became frightened and worried. And then they realized it could have been several of them.

But then they heard Chandler Zavala talking to them and giving him a thumbs up in the air while he was strapped to the backboard with a neck injury and taken off the field, and they did the only thing they could.

“That’s the scary part of what we do,” center Bradley Bozeman said. “When someone like Chandler goes down, and he’s sitting there, they’re taking the facemask off and wheeling the car out, it’s scary. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to move on; you Got to log back in.

“He was like, ‘Hey, bring it on,’ so we knew he was good. But just trying to keep fighting and just trying to remember that moment. Whenever they There’s always a feeling of relief when some say it back, or they give a thumbs up or whatever. He did that, and you know, he was telling us it was good.”
