A new UEFA Champions League campaign begins Tuesday with 32 teams dreaming of lifting the trophy on May 28, 2022 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Chelsea enter the competition as defending champions, but there are a number of teams that hope to challenge, including new powers such as PSG and Manchester City and traditional contenders such as Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

In its current format, the Champions League begins in late June with a preliminary round, three qualifying rounds and a play-off round, all played in two phases. The six surviving teams enter the group stage, with the 26 teams already qualified. The 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four teams each and play each other in a double round-robin system. The eight group winners and eight runners-up advance to the knockout stage which ends with the final match in late May or early June. The winner of the Champions League qualifies for the following year’s Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. [6] [7] Spanish clubs have the most wins (18 wins), followed by England (14 wins) and Italy (12 wins). England has the highest number of winning teams, with five clubs winning the title. The competition has been won by 22 clubs, of which 13 have won it more than once and eight have successfully defended their titles. Real Madrid is the most successful club in the history of the tournament, having won it 13 times, including in its first five seasons and three in a row from 2016 to 2018. Bayern Munich is the only club to have won all their matches. A singles tournament en route to their cup win in the 2019–2020 season. [9] Chelsea are the defending champions, having defeated Manchester City 1–0 in the 2021 final.
