The final field and hurdles have been closed for the $5 million Caulfield Cup over 2400m, with race favorites Smokin’ Roman doing well in the draw.

The Maher and Eustace-trained favorite will be partnered by Jamie Kahn and the pair will exit barrier five in the 18-horse field.

Stablemate – and number one saddlecloth wearer – Gold Trip drew gate 12 for jockey Mark Zahra when the team elected to tackle the cup instead of the Cox plate on Saturday.

Some other major fans were less fortunate, with Benaud ($8.50) with Carpark drawing in 20, while last year’s runner-up Non-conformist ($9) came in with 15—though both horses would move two places, in case of an emergency. Dursten (6) and Makram (7) failed to get starts.

Edward and James Cummings will surpass Deuce ($13) and Allegron ($15), the pair with nine and 14 barriers, respectively.

Wednesday’s Congee Cup offered a waiver in the Coalfield Cup ballot, but the dominant winner was not among the Gunstock Coalfield Cup entries.

Trolley Rose entered the field upon final acceptance, with the Simon Wilde-trained mare drawing eight for jockey Dean Yendall.

Cancelled

The $5 million cup has never been cancelled, even during World War II, and Jake Norton, executive director of Melbourne Racing Club Racing, said a postponement was ‘never in the reckoning’.

‘It’s taking as much effort through this heavy band as possible to give the track a chance to dry out as much as possible.’

Since Caulfield hosted Thousand Guinness on Wednesday, the running rail has been moved out six meters to allow the cut-up to be moved inside the run out of play and hopefully provide a surface firm enough to hold on to Don’t get scratched

There is not much marking on the track till 400 meters. We’ve got wear covered. Even though they’ve gone off shore, we’ve covered most of it,’ Bailey said.

Draw

The 2400-meter start at Caulfield is positioned directly on top of the home turn on the home turn, so the 400-meter run takes place before the field’s first turn is negotiated.

The wide-caught horses are forced to cover extra ground as there are sharp turns on the Caulfield track, so luck in running, as in any race, is important.

The Caulfield Cup ground is announced the Wednesday afternoon before Raceday and the barrier draw is held later that day.

We will update this page with the latest information once the barrier draw information is available. ResNet will also provide a comprehensive Caulfield Cup form guide, so be sure to check it out if available before placing any bets!

Form

Since dating back to 1879, the Caulfield Cup – Australia’s other great cup – should be seen not only as the lead up to the big in Flemington, but as a spectacular 2400m hurdles in its own right.

And for this edition, it’s especially true: Saturday’s $5 million contest is an out-and-out cracker. If it doesn’t get your pulse racing, you don’t deserve it.

The 18-horse field includes seven winners from Group 1, a handful of up-and-comers who will surely win one in the future, a Melbourne Cup hero looking at his best in the end, and several for the 3200m feature. Important occasion First Tuesday of November.

Last year’s race was notable as a confirmation of a champion, the encouragement of the former Queensland occupant who lit up the country with a string of victories, including the Caulfield Cup, as the lowest favorite in many years. This year, he is one injury away, but it is a strong field overall. And the best part is that most of these crucial occasions are in great form.
