Injury update
“It was hard to sit at home and watch the game and not be able to do anything or help people,” Desmith said at the first training camp. “Definitely a depressing place and somewhere I’ve never been before. Hopefully, this is the last time.”
Friday night in Buffalo, for the first time since that surgery, Desmith returned for his first game action — well, preseason game action. Desmith wasn’t tested a ton during the Penguins’ 2-1 exhibition win at Buffalo, but he pulled off all 11 shots he faced in 30:30 of the game action.
The full preseason has been a welcome return to normal for all players, but this is especially true of goalscorers.
Married
I have been in teams where most of the boys were already married,” he explained. “I felt like I had a better time than a lot of them. So that was cool.”
At Rust’s reception, a 10-man cover band rocked the house, giving the Penguins an informal off-season workout on the dance floor. Rust said McCann, Brian Dumoulin, Chad Ruhwedel and Justin Schultz helped start the party. But none of them, reportedly, could match Daly’s moves.
“I saw myself in the wedding video,” McCann said. “it was not good.”
Added Dumoulin: “I’m not a good dancer. I’m a behind-the-scenes guy, just acting like an idiot. I’m usually not on the D-floor very much.”
Dumoulin says it was great to “loosen” with old Penguins teammates.
“It’s just an excuse to get together, to party, to have a good time,” he said. “Those championship runs bring back a lot of good memories that we had. We had a lot of old people, which was amazing. It’s good to be reunited.”
Record
On June 30, 2015, DeSmith signed a contract with an ECHL team, the Wheeling Nailers, for the 2015–16 season after the NCAA denied a transfer waiver to play in a senior season of college hockey. He would have been ineligible to play college hockey after 2015–2016, as the NCAA generally only allows student-athletes to use its standard four seasons of eligibility for five academic years.
Desmith would appear in a total of thirteen games with the Nailers’ 2015–16 Eastern Conference Championship team, including a 5–2–2 record, 2.55 goals against average, and a 0.915 save percentage.
On January 3, 2016, Desmith was loaned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, an affiliate of the Naylors American Hockey League (AHL). He played his first game for the WBS Penguins on December 26, 2015, against the Hershey Bears, blocking all seven shots he faced during his 20-minute game.
