Highlights
Perhaps no player in the Mountain West has generated more excitement over the years, and thus makes for a more interesting NFL Draft prospect than Nevada quarterback Carson Strong.
A native of Vacaville, Calif., Strong’s scholarship offer from Wolf Pack was the only one he received from the FBS program. After remodeling his first year with the team, he won the starting quarterback fight in 2019 but didn’t actually take off until 2020. While playing Jay Norwell’s Air Raid offense, Strong entered several sections of the program’s record books and left Reno. Earned Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year in each of the last two years, as part of the conversation as the best signal-caller in its history.
He looks the part of an NFL quarterback and has many of the obvious traits that favor teams in a passer-friendly league, but he takes just as much risk in this year’s draft class as any other player in his position.
Mock draft
It’s crazy how quickly things change. Looking forward to the 2021 NFL Draft, there were many who believed that Strong could be a first-round talent. Now, he’s trying to prove to teams that he can be exactly the same without testing at the NFL Combine. His saving grace is that he still showed his arm strength in the passing drill.
Sitting in QB6 and 75th overall on the Pro Football Network Big Board, Strong can still be at the mercy of team doctors. At this point, the test doesn’t even matter. Showing that he can still sling may be the one thing that gets him on board. If Strong is out in the first round, someone is getting a steal.
