Carrasco was born in 1987 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. By age 10 he was playing baseball, initially as a third baseman. He was discovered by a baseball scout in Venezuela at age 16, and threw for Sal Agostinelli, international scouting director for the Philadelphia Phillies, demonstrating a 91 mph (146 km/h) fastball. At a young age, Carrasco learned to throw left-handed, in addition to his natural right-handed delivery, but he does not consider himself ambidextrous.

Fantasy
The plan is for “Cookie” to pitch three innings. If all goes well the right-hander could finally join the Mets’ rotation afterwards.
Mets RHP Carlos Carrasco (hamstring) will make his next rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.
Mets
Carlos Carrasco will have every opportunity to show he’s ready to rejoin the Mets when he pitches in his second minor league rehab game, on Tuesday for Triple-A Syracuse at Trenton.
The right-hander, who is returning from a torn right hamstring that has kept him on the injured list since spring training, is expected to pitch three innings.
Leukemia
On June 6, he received a stunning diagnosis: chronic myeloid leukemia, a life-threatening cancer of the blood. Four days later a battery of tests at the Cleveland Clinic confirmed the diagnosis. Carrasco, a native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, was 31 years old with a wife and five children. Carrasco vowed to beat CML.
Injury
Carrasco is set to make a rehab start for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets on Tuesday night before possibly being called up to the major leagues. The 11-year veteran has been working his way back from a torn hamstring and could line up to start as early as next Sunday for a suddenly thin Mets’ pitching staff.
