Fantasy:

Carlos Carrasco and Francisco Lindor would make Mets fans forget a Year 1 that left questions about health and temperament after the Mets won 70-something in 2021.

But, to date in 2022, Carrasco and Lindor have been answers. They are elevating by far the most expensive Mets team in history.

Contract:

Carrasco is signed at $12 million in each of the next two seasons, part of a deal that includes a $14 million million team option for 2023 with a $3 million buyout. The option would become guaranteed if he pitches in 170 innings in 2022 and is found to be healthy for the 2023 season.

They are emphatically making sure there will be no Worst Team Money Can Buy, The Sequel. Carrasco and Lindor are reintroducing themselves to the City with a reminder of why they were obtained from Cleveland in the first place — by carrying the Mets to first place in the NL East.

When Carrasco learned he had chronic myeloid leukemia in 2019, he thought about the worst possibilities for about 10 seconds. Since those 10 seconds, he’s thought positive thoughts while having faith. “You’re fine, you don’t have anything,” Carrasco said his wife, Kerry, has told him from Day One until now.

On June 6, he received a stunning diagnosis: chronic myeloid leukemia, a life-threatening cancer of the blood. Four days later a battery of tests at the Cleveland Clinic confirmed the diagnosis.

Carrasco, a native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, was 31 years old with a wife and five children.
