Santos Laguna’s goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo and Chivas’ playmaker Roberto Alvarado will now join Mexico ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers, while Club Tijuana’s Jonathan Orozco and Monterey’s Rodolfo Pizarro will be ruled out with.

The roster changes come ahead of matches against the United States (March 24) at the Estadio Azteca, in Honduras (March 27) and against El Salvador (March 30) in Mexico City.

Acevedo last performed as a starting goalkeeper for El Trai in a friendly against Chile last December. The appearance in a 2–2 draw for the 25-year-old was his first in a senior national team game. The 23-year-old Alvarado earned last-minute runs as a midfield substitute for Mexico in a 2-1 loss to Canada in November in World Cup qualifying.

The two will now join the roster that is preparing to face the US on Thursday.

Thursday’s qualifiers will use new fan protocols that were tested in previous home games. Mexico’s two previous home qualifiers had a limited number of 2,000 pre-selected attendees at the venue, as part of punishment over the use of an anti-gay chant by fans.

The FMF has not yet confirmed what the capacity will be for the games, although reports say attendance will be at 40-45,000.

In the eight-team octagon table, Mexico are currently third with 21 points, at the level of the USMNT who are second in the table due to a high goal difference. A win for either side on the 24th would give a huge boost to World Cup hopes for both the countries who have yet to secure a spot for Qatar 2022.

Transfer

Reports out of Mexico suggest Bayer will sign Leverkusen goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo. Fox Sports was the first to report Leverkusen’s interest in Santos Laguna’s goalkeeper. Local outlet Multimedia Laguna then not only confirmed the story but reported that a deal has now been struck. However, those reports have been brushed off by Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfs on Sunday.

“The rumors about signing Acevedo are rubbish,” Rolfs told Bild on Sunday. “They just aren’t true.” Acevedo has seen its stock in Guerreros rise dramatically. A starter since 2020/21, Acevedo was most recently named for the Mexican national team for the friendly against Chile on 8 December. The academy product has played 89 games for Santos Laguna.

Bayer Leverkusen already have four goalkeepers under contract. Lukas Heradeki and his number two, Andrey Lunev, are under contract until 2023. Third keeper Niklas Lomb will see his contract expire at the end of the season. Former U21 national team goalkeeper Lennart Grill is expected to return from SK Brann in the winter and is under contract until 2024. Acevedo would have been the fifth goalkeeper under contract.
