Esparza was the first UFC strawweight champion, the first Invicta FC strawweight champion, and was generally considered the best strawweight fighter in the world, holding each title.[5][6] She earned the UFC championship by winning the 16-woman tournament for the first time. Carla Esparza is an American strawweight fighter currently signed to Invicta FC. Throughout her career, she took part in regional events across the United States as well as Bellator twice, including her first women’s tournament. Both his careers have been defeated at Bellator.

Esparza’s background is primarily in wrestling, having competed at both the high school and collegiate levels. Wrestling for Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California, he won several state and national wrestling tournaments. His high school success led to a scholarship to Menlo College, where he was coached by two-time Olympian, Lee Allen. He was named an All-American twice. During college, he began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, under Rainer, Ryron, and Ralek Gracie. He then expanded his mixed martial arts repertoire when he began training at Team Oyama during the summer of his junior year of college.

 

Only six months after her professional debut, she was invited to participate in Bellator’s first women’s tournament as a last-minute replacement. Her first Bellator opponent was the then undefeated Megumi Fujii. She lost to Armbar in the second round and was eliminated from the tournament. Esparza was defeated again at Bellator by Jessica Aguilar by split decision in 2011. After his final Bellator stint, he defeated Felice Herrig at XFC 15.
