The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals begin their 2022 season at Busch Stadium on Thursday. The Cardinals are seeking their First Division title since 2019, while the rebuilt Pirates will hope to avoid MLB’s worst record ever. The pitching matchup will feature Pirates right-hander JT Brubaker and Cardinals veteran Adam Wainwright, marking the first start of their final season.

This will be the 31st time the Cardinals and the Pirates have met on Inauguration Day. This is just the third time in 2009, however, that the Pirates have won two of those three competitions.

Pirates: The Pirates remains a team in a rebuilding phase. He made several low-risk additions to his roster over the winter, including Daniel Vogelbach, Roberto Perez and Greg Allen, each of which could start on Thursday. Better times are coming for the Pittsburgh franchise that has grown accustomed to that idea.

Cardinals: As we mentioned in the introduction, this is expected to be the final season of Wainwright’s story career. He’s hardly alone in that regard, either, with both catcher Yadier Molina and newly signed hitter Albert Pujols expected to hang their cleats at the end of the season as well. Then, it will be a landmark year for the Cardinals and one of the most recognizable faces in recent franchise history.

Astros win 10th consecutive opening day game.

Framber Valdez overtook Shohei Ohtani with 6 innings of a two-hit ball, and the Houston Astros tied the longest winning streak in major league history with a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night.

Ohtani scored a one-run delivery in the fifth inning for the Angels, who lost their season opener for the eighth time in nine years. Last season’s AL MVP took advantage of baseball’s off-season rule changes to score 0 for 4 at the plate, allowing him to remain the designated hitter after finishing pitching.

Mark Canha and Starling Marte—two products of the Mets’ quarter-billion dollar offseason spending spree—scored for five shutout innings from Tyler Megill, Jacob deGrome’s fill-in as the opening day starter, and New York manager Buck. Showalters won Thursday night’s 5-1 debut against the Washington Nationals.

Things take a scary turn for the Mets at the top of the ninth inning on Thursday night when Pete Alonso was hit near the face on the pitch by National reliever Nate Thompson.

Alonso’s helmet flew off as he hit the ground, but he came up and headed first before being pulled back toward the dugout by manager Buck Showalter. The pitch first took the eye off his shoulder and his helmet was fitted with a C-flap.

“All right, just a cracked lip,” Alonso said after the game. “It’s done. I have all my teeth, no injuries, I’m all right.”

U Darvesh kept D’Back unstoppable with a six
Padres right-hander Yu Darvish hit the Arizona Diamondbacks with four strikes and three strikes through six innings – but his night ended after 92 pitches.

Tim Hill relieved Darvas and dropped a leadoff single to Pavin Smith in the bottom of the seventh, ending the team’s bid for no-no.
